According to the Associated Press, baby boomers are swelling the ranks of online dating sites and John Valentino is a happy veteran.

At 57, after a decade of pushing profiles and awkward meet-ups with strangers, he’s married to 54-year-old year Debbie, a former Marine he met online two years ago.

“I had plenty of lemons before lemonade, believe me,” said Valentino, a furniture salesman in Long Branch, N.J.

One prospect said he was too old. Another went out with him to win a bet with a co-worker. A third told him all about her two grown sons and “their careers in the penal system, only they weren’t guards.”

That’s when Valentino ventured onto a site that caters to older people — at the time called SeniorPeopleMeet.com. He quickly let go of his prejudice against the word “senior” and found Debbie, who has war stories of her own about trying to find a mate her age online.

The musical entertainment was the highlight of the event. The Vocals are a singing group of four, full of energy and personality. The male singers would walk among the tables and croon to the ladies while holding their hands. The microphone was passed to resident Glen Glaser who sang us to the end of a refrain. You could not help but join in singing the familiar lyrics or tap your foot.

It only made the afternoon sweeter knowing it was a fundraiser for the Sacramento Children's Home Society.

I want to invite all single people to the singles group. This is purely social and we do a wide variety of things; Rivercats games, local events, Capital Tour, social evenings once a month, dinner out, movies and lots more. We do have two men in the group, and invite more to come and share their ideas of what they would like to do. We have a business meeting at 5:00 PM at the Lodge the first Wed. of every month. All of our activities are not listed in the monthly bulletin, as often we do not have them plannned in time (by the 15th of the prior month. I hope all singles will come and meet new friends. If you have questions, please feel free to call me. Kathy Powell - 690-8343

If so, there will be an introductory meeting on Thursday January 7th at 1:00 PM in the Arbour Lodge. This meeting will be used to introduce mah-jong and determine interest for a weekly game.

There are many different versions of the game, but the Basic concept is very similar to gin rummy. Instead of grouping cards together, you are grouping tiles together in either suits or sequences. You draw a number of tiles at the beginning of the game and continue to draw and discard until someone goes out with mah-jong.

Learning new skills keeps the mind sharp, so give Ben Salak a call at 670-6082 to let him know if you are interested.

We just came back from our first card game of “Hand and Foot.” We played at the Lodge (Monday at 1:00 PM) and had two tables of six people each.

It was easy game to pick up – maybe easier for me as I had played Canasta before. Hand and Foot is related to Canasta in that the object is to make “books” of red (natural) and black (ones with wild cards included) of seven of the same number. There are a few differences in that each player is dealt two sets of cards - the hand, which is played first, and the foot, which is played when the hand has been used up. The scoring has a couple of twists with books of red 7’s and red aces being worth more points than other red books. The game is played with five decks of cards. There are numerous variations of this game but Ulla Iavello has typed up a sheet of the rules used at Glenbrooke.

Although Hand and Foot can be played by four people in partnerships, it can also be played by six in two teams of three, or by any number of people playing as individuals.

So if you like Canasta, or would enjoy learning a new card game, come and join us on Mondays at 1:00PM at the Arbour Lodge.

.
