This is for all my friends. I have to tell you that my wife, Marlene passed away this morning at 12:30. The attending physicians and nurses were very kind to all of us. Marlene was my wife for fifty six years. We were married on Bastille Day, July 14, 1956. She was my partner and best friend for so long that I cannot remember being single. We started a population explosion. We had three daughters, Terri, Toni, and Tammi. Our daughters gave us Nine grand children. And our grand children gave us four great grandchildren, and one coming shortly.

Sunday December 18, 2011, 50 Glenbrooke residents boarded the chartered bus in front of the Arbour Lodge at noon. There was energy in the air as we all looked forward to the trip to Nevada City for the last Sunday of their famous Victorian Christmas.

We arrived at 1:30 and eagerly unloaded close to the entrance of the blocked off street. The stores were very crowded but people seemed to be good spirits.

Having gone to high school in Nevada City I was familiar with the Victorian Christmas (and Grass Valley's Cornish Christmas) from having to wear those costumes and roast chestnuts on the street. Now I was going to see it as a tourist

For us, it was a day of remembering what used to be in the buildings and finding amusement in some of the items sold. Remembering how difficult it was to clear manzanita, we thought it was creative to see a young entrepeneur selling small blocks of manzanita for a dollar a block. Of course, we couldn't walk by the children trying so hard to play Christmas Music with various instruments (and cold fingers) without dropping money in their upturned top hat or open guitar case.

We had a nice dinner - in what USED to be the flower shop - then we boarded the bus for Glenbrooke - arriving right at 7:00PM.

Unfortunately, I was so busy enjoying myself, I only got one picture on the bus with my cell phone. I am sure some members of the photo club were able to get pictures of the event. If you would like to share your photos, email them to me at newsofglenbrooke@gmail.com and I will post a slide show of the day.

WHAT ARE YOUR MEMORIES FROM THE DAY?

They are expecting a good season of salmon spawning. Salmon run continues into December and then the Steelhead begin their trek up the river and ladder. I spent an hour or so there, just at the ladder watching the salmon climb the ladder. Lots of fish to catch a photo of but you have to be ready and quick.

The Nimbus Fish Hatchery is just below Folsom Dam off of Hazel and US 50. There hours are 8:00am to 3:00pm. for more information, go to http://www.dfg.ca.gov/fish/hatcheries/nimbus/ .

They will start milking and taking eggs tomorrow (Thursday 11/3/11). Some might not like the egg taking as they actually kill the fish and then cut it open to get the eggs. Salmon die within three or so days after laying eggs so it is not that they would live if the eggs are not taken.

Interestingly, when the steelhead runin December the process is different as the adult fish live and produce for a few years to they take the eggs without killing the female steelhead.
