Officers from the Elk Grove Police Department’s Problem Oriented Policing Unit will be available to answer questions from members of the community on January 27, 2012 from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at La Bou (8694 Elk Grove Blvd.) and Nugget Market (7101 Elk Grove Blvd.) as part of the “Coffee with a Cop” program.

The “Coffee with a Cop” program is a unique way to strengthen the partnership between the police department and the community it serves. “It’s very important that our police officers develop strong relationships within the community,” said Elk Grove Police Chief Robert Lehner. “We believe that this type of open dialogue plays a critical role in establishing a true partnership between the community and the police department.”

Members of the community will be able to ask specific or general questions related to the neighborhoods they live in.

For additional information, please contact Crime Prevention Specialist Denise Costello at (916) 478-8117 or Sergeant James Fuller of the Problem Oriented Policing at (916) 627-3727. Additional dates and locations will be posted on the Elk Grove Police Department’s web site (www.elkgrovepd.org) as they become available.

Quarterly Glenbrooke Neighborhood Watch Meeting, held November 13, 2011

Glenbrooke Update— Homes sold/occupied=416 All but5 belong to the Neighborhood Watch. Residents=654 Total; Singles=204 of which there are--- Male=26 and Female=178.

If you see something that needs attention, a safety issue, call your Village Coordinator.
Village Coordinators—Village 1--Becky Matson
Village 2--Bev Chapman
Village 3--Margaret Nispel
Village 5--Joyce Byers

There are presently 41 Block Captains in Glenbrooke. I thank every one of them.
They help make sure our community is informed and as safe as we can possible make it.

The Crime Report for the last 3 months, One Barking Dog, classified as a public nuisance. Actually, that was the report for the whole year. Good job all of you making our presence known.

We are watching. If something doesn’t look right to you, don’t be afraid to call the Police.

We are working in partnership with them. 911 for active crime or 714-5115 for non-emergency.

There was a Coordinators Meeting on November 8th. Two main subjects were discussed.
First Graffiti calls will now be handled by the City Code Enforcement.
Calls can be made to the following numbers:
Graffiti Hot Line-478-8231
Ask Elk Grove—691-2489--
Transit-Garbage-non emergency
Police/Graffiti-Animal Control
City code Enforcement—687-3023

The second item discussed was safety as we come into the Holiday Season.
Don’t leave items visible in your cars.

After Thanksgiving the Police Department will be in the parking lots looking at cars and placing yellow tags on your windshields letting you know if you made yourself a target or not.

Don’t leave purses unattended in shopping carts, be careful when visiting a gold buying company-don’t get followed home or accosted in the parking lot, be careful buying or selling on places like Craig’s List, and don’t give out personal information where not needed.

These are just a few common sense recommendations. Catalytic converters thefts are up especially on Toyota trucks and SUV’s—easy to get under. Be safe.

On November 9th the National Emergency Alert System Testwas conducted.

In case of an emergency we should have on hand a 72 hour emergency supply per person. I have an Emergency Supply List if you would like a copy. If you want to learn more, join the CERT class to learn household/community safety—How to use a fire extinguisher.

Direct e-mailings Crime Alerts/Press Releases from the Elk Grove Police Department
Your Block Captains are forwarding information to you periodically, not all of the information concerns Glenbrooke specifically, but does keep all of Elk Grove informed.

Two important Press Releases that came through: On September 1—You can now register you cell phone with the Sacramento Regional Reverse 911 System to receive alerts in your geographical location.

You can register by visiting www.elkgrovepd.org and click on the
Reverse 911 Tab on the home page and follow the prompts.

On September 28—The City launched a Free Mobile Phone App for your iPhone/Android.
It’s part of the City’s new streamlined customer service program, known as Ask Elk Grove. You have 24/7 access to city services. Call 691-2489 or go to http://www.elkgrovecity.org/ask-elk-grove/mobile.asp

Other Warnings—Dog Pepper Spray—Halt, Mace, Bear—not legal for sale in California

GPS—if devices stolen, the bad guy can find you/your home---Use a password. Wasp spray as a weapon, off use of any such product-you can be charged with a felony
Water Bottle Bombs—be careful—when picking up garbage, an innocent looking bottle
may not be so innocent. Citronella gel candles—any liquid fuel can burn/combust. We can’t always see the flame. Many such substances will coat/stick to you while they burn.

Car alarms—take your keys to bed with you—this is a noise maker many of you have already and can be activated in an emergency and won’t shut off until you de-activate it.

Street Lights that are out-reported. Westminster/Ashby-Westminster/Peak Forest—9846/9850 Derby.

Check your address tile light—there are 2 bulbs—Emergency crews need to find you.

Permission slips for the Glenbrooke Directory and One Call Now.—It is important that you keep these numbers current. If you need to make a change, contact me and I will bring another permission slip to you. We use the most recent signed slip. It’s up to you to let us know of changes.

Everyone got a Neighborhood Watch sticker for there house when they were signed up for the Watch. Not all are mounted—that is your choice. If someone needs a sticker, contact me.

If anyone wants information on the Residential Knox Box, contact me.

Service Provider List---Disclaimer Mary Weatherill compiled this list with information given to me by referring residents. Contact me if you want a copy.

If you would like to purchase Window Guards for your house, call Jim Morris. The material used matches the window trim—someone trying to break in wouldn’t necessarily see that you have the window blocked so that it can’t open. One step more beyond the lock.

Phone Tree —There has been some concern about some of our residents who may for one
reason or another need or want a daily phone call, mostly for health reasons or loneliness.

If you are interested in being part of a group to call residents, please contact me.
On the flip side of this---let me know if you are in need of such a call. Let’s see if this is something that would help our residents.

I was asked about Halloween and how many, if any, children we had at our doors.

I asked the Block Captains how many they had had and to get back to me.

Most of the block captains said they did not have any trick or treaters with the exception of OakhamWay (near Acorn Park).

Evidently some children [about 20] came in from the neighborhood just across the bridge.

As one Block Captain said it's an excuse to buy some candy. Just make sure you like it--you may end up eating it. It's fun to see the Halloween decorations.

Most residents wouldn't open their doors even if some children stopped by.

Many of us also go Trick or Treating with the grandchildren in their neighborhoods.

Enjoy the Holiday as you see fit--just be safe.

The Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) training is on Wednesday, September 21st at the Arbour Lodge from 5:30 - 8:30 PM. The training is seven weeks long to become certified as a first responder. However, if you are not interested in providing community service, you can still attend to learn how to prepare your household. It is also possible to make up a class at another training and still become certified . The dates of the training are Sept. 21st and 28th, Oct. 5th, 19th, 26th, Nov. 2nd, and 16th, 2011.

Please sign up at the Arbour Lodge in the Activities Binder. Please note that the criterion for the Fire Department is for the program to be open to non-Del Webb residents as well. If you have any questions, please call John Eldred (listed in the resident directory).

It was so disturbing to head out the Lodge for a Monday morning game of Mah Jong and see the fountain in Rose Garden Park broken. There was caution tape around it so obviously CSD was aware of the problem. It seems pretty unlikely the top just broke. It seem much more likely some vandals were bored. I just don't understand how people think is funny or cute to destroy property - especially beautiful public art.

Before

On another note, it seems there are either bugs or major watering problems in Acorn Park.

Glenbrooke is the biggest Watch Group in Elk Grove! Come celebrate that with our National Night Out Party on August 2, 2011 in Promenade Park at 6:00PM. This is the time to get to know your neighbors, by sharing food and drink and visiting. There will also be a Raffle!

The event aims to bring neighbors together and encourage them to be active in preventing crime in their neighborhoods. "It's about getting to know your neighbors...," says Denise Costello, the Elk Grove Police's Crime Prevention Specialist.

Invite a new neighbor or get your friends together. Bring a chair, water or drinks, a dish to share ( last year there were appetizers, hot dishes, salads, desserts, fresh fruit).

Thanks to Mary Weatherill for her work year round on Neighborhood Watch. Mary will be bringing paper plates, plastic cutlery, plastic glasses, napkins, 4 garbage containers 2 pop-ups shades, and 3 -- 6 foot tables. If you have a table or pop up shade--bring it if you want--they all get used. Promenade Park is behind the Sales Office

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness,
generate support for and participation in local crime prevention programs, strengthen
neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and send a message to criminals
letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
Throughout the city of Elk Grove, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., residents are asked to
spend the evening outside with their neighbors and police officers. The National Night
Out party is a simple way for people to meet one another, have fun and explore how they
might work together to improve the safety and quality of their neighborhoods. For
additional information about National Night Out, please contact Crime Prevention
Specialist Denise Costello at (916) 478-8117 or David Feinberg (916) 478-8130
