Glenbrooke Community Association (GCA) Board Candidate’s have all been invited to submit their Candidate statements to GlenbrookeNews for posting. There are four candidates and this is third in the series -ed.

My wife and I have been part of the Glenbrooke community for nearly four years. For the last 18 months, I have served as the Treasurer of the Board. During this first term, I have worked along with my fellow board members and facility director to bring long term financial stability and consistency to Glenbrooke and its operations without the need for an assessment increase. In fact, our balance sheet has steadily improved, we have operated in the black, and fortunately we have even been able to implement a slight decrease in our monthly assessments. I also suggested and the board endorsed a “Facilities Improvement Fund” so that we could set aside funds to implement our future long term plans for the Arbour Lodge area.

I am proud of Glenbrooke and have tried to help make this a place where we can all openly participate and feel a true sense of ownership. Actively serving on the Communications Committee has been an excellent tool in understanding the opinions and wishes of our residents. We are also working to improve staff job descriptions and overall policies to better manage our community and our resources.

In my opinion, a single term on the board is insufficient to bring about all the necessary changes and improvements needed. I ask for your support for election to another 2 year board term to continue on this path. In another year when we will likely see control of the board pass to local board members, it will be important to have experienced incumbent board members for continuity and leadership. I would appreciate the opportunity of being one of those board members still serving.

From a career standpoint, for over 30 years I was employed as a senior executive with Sutter Health, a major not-for-profit health care system in Sacramento. My job titles included Regional President and Senior Vice President. I also served for several years as CEO for UC San Diego Healthcare including the medical centers and clinics.. During these years, my duties involved serving on several dozen boards with responsibility for managing hospital and medical clinic operations with fiscal accountability for $200 to $750 million. My job was to organize the board leadership, simultaneously serve on multiple boards, and help engineer financial turnarounds for the institutions involved. I understand board operations and enjoy the opportunity to serve in leadership and decision making for the benefit of organizations such as Glenbrooke.

Board dynamics is an art, not a science. While observing my former homeowners board for nearly 15 years, I saw a combination of both artful and awful decision making. Sometimes boards take up causes or directions that defy logic. At times, boards love passing rules that seem to serve ill defined purposes. I served on my HOA board as secretary for four years (meeting 11 times a year) on a platform of bringing both consistency and common sense to the board.

I believe we have a good start here in Glenbrooke, and with your support we will continue in this direction. I will work hard to make sure that we are fully prepared for the transition to local governance when we separate from Pulte, including an understanding of commitments made to Glenbrooke by the City of Elk Grove, Sacramento County, Cosumnes Community Service District, and any other external agency or government. And of course, working diligently to protect our assets as a community will always be near the top of my list.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

The Ballroom of the Arbour Lodge will be transformed into your favorite Italian Bistro for the night. The Fun starts at 6:00PM and the cost is only $5.00 for Spaghetti, salad, and dessert. As always, coffee, tea and water will be available but you are welcome to bring your own vino or favorite beverage.

If you are planning on attending this MINGLES event, please sign up in the Activity Binder in the lobby of the lodge. Since the MINGLES steering committee is making all the food, it is really important to get an accurate count. This will help make sure there is not only enough food, but also keeps costs down by reducing waste.

Glenbrooke Community Association (GCA) Board Candidate's have all been invited to submit their Candidate statements to GlenbrookeNews for posting. There are four candidates and this is second in the series -ed.

I am running for re-election to the Glenbrooke Board of Directors. My nearly 2 years of tenure as Vice-President has provided me with the experience and critical knowledge that it takes to be an effective member of the Board. I have been honored to represent the residents of Glenbrooke and feel that during my term much progress has been made. We improved communication with residents, maintained a balanced budget, reduced the monthly assessments and planned for the expansion of facilities.

I am running for re-election for several reasons. I have learned that it takes time to become knowledgeable of the duties and responsibilities of a Board member and the laws governing Home Owner Associations. Glenbrooke needs leadership to help us move forward towards having a resident majority on the Board, which will occur a year from April.

As a Board member my focus has and will be on improving communication so that all residents feel heard when they have ideas, and that information is conveyed to residents efficiently. I will continue to stress that we maintain fiscal integrity with a balanced budget. I am opposed to additional assessments and will pursue the possibility of further decreases to our monthly assessments. I will continually look ahead to the needs of the residents as our community grows and expands in terms of expansion and replacement costs. I will also be looking to find additional ways to reduce our budget such as lower energy costs, reduced insurance premiums and efficient use of our common facilities.

I feel that the knowledge I have gained as your current Vice-President can be used to further support the Glenbrooke community. If elected I will plan to have bi-monthly town hall meetings where residents can brainstorm ideas and have discussions about our future. We have moved our community from discord to harmony, as it is difficult to start a community and challenging to continue one.

“A vote for me is a vote for experience, integrity and a positive future for the Glenbrooke community”

Thank you,
Sebastian Lampe

P.S. I am willing to have a discussion about any Glenbrooke community topic that you are concerned

about. Please leave a message for me in the Lodge office or email me at SebastianLampe@gmail.com

There were approximately 70 people and the food was tasty, plentiful and diverse. The dessert table looked like something out of a magazine. Sorry, I was enjoying myself so much I forgot to get any pictures.

The competition between the tables heated up for a fun trivia challenge with the winners enjoying boxes of candy! One of the best things observed was neighbors sitting around the fireplace in the Lodge just visiting after the potluck. That's what it is all about - taking advantage of opportunities to get to know neighbors better, have fun and enjoy living in Glenbrooke.

As you know, it doesn't happen by itself. If you have ideas or suggestions for events, want to provide feedback, volunteer to help with some of these events, please contact one of the hard-working women of the MINGLES Steering Committee (they are all listed in the Resident Directory).

One of the more touching aspects of having m book published is the number of people who have come up to me asking when the movie version will be out. I love hearing this because it makes me feel less demented at my own similar thoughts. From the moment I wrote the first chapter, I’ve had a vision of having a small part in the film, which expands when the director sees how talented I am, and then walking up the stairs at the Kodak Theatre to pick up my Best Supporting Actress Oscar. I think you can see why I write fiction.

But clearly I am not the only one with these thoughts because at one of my signings this became a topic of conversation when someone asked who I would like to play my protagonist, Alex Harris, in the movie. Sandra Bullock came instantly to mind, though she would have to do something with her gorgeous mane because everyone knows Alex most assuredly does not have a great head of hair—something she inherited from her creator.

But before I put a lot of thought into who will play all these delightful characters I’ve created, I need to find the right writer/director/producer. On this matter, I have spent quite a bit of time. I’m happy to announce that I’ve narrowed the competition substantially down to four amazing women.

First, there’s Rita Wilson, wife of Tom Hanks, in case you didn’t recognize her name. I think she shines in everything she’s in and I’m sorry to say that I don’t see her nearly enough. But more importantly, she brought My Big Fat Greek Wedding to life and I think she could do amazing things with Armed.

Next, there’s those two powerhouses—Nora Ephron and Nancy Meyers. Do they ever get it wrong? I think not. Let’s take a look at what Nora has given us. There’ Silkwood, When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and Julie & Julia to mention a few and let’s not forget her books, which keep me up to the wee hours laughing my head off. And what about Nancy who’s brought us Father of the Bride, Something’s Gotta Give, and It’s Complicated? It seems time one of them leaped into the cozy mystery pool and Armed would be the perfect diving in point.

And finally I come to the last person on my list. Truth be told, she would probably be my first choice. Not only does she act but she writes and directs as well. She consistently brings a sense of humor, intelligence and class to everything she does. I speak of Bonnie Hunt who has an impressive list of acting credits including Rainman, The Green Mile, Jerry McGuire, Cheaper by the Dozen, Jumanji, and a gem of a movie called Return to Me, which she also wrote and directed. I would love her to write the screenplay and I think she would make a smashing Samantha, Alex’s wisecracking sister.

But how do I reach these people? I’ve searched the Internet in vain. I’ve created a Twitter account but with no followers how would I get the word out? Like with lots of things, it’s who you know, and as far as getting a movie made, I know nobody.

So if by some miracle of cyberspace this blog pops up on the computer screens of Bonnie/Rita/Nora/Nancy, could one of you have your people call my people? Let’s talk

Yesterday I spoke with Jesse Rosten, the uber-talented Redding director and cinematographer, about a recent film project of his that's created quite a buzz, not just in the North State, but around the world.

I could describe it as a spoof on beauty advertisements, but I think our conversation will make more sense if you watch the video below first so you know what the heck we're talking about. It's called "Fotoshop by Adobé".

It's short. Go ahead and watch it. We'll wait. Fotoshop by Adobé from Jesse Rosten on Vimeo.

Q: Jesse, I'll bet I've seen that video half a dozen times now. It's just really smart, but with a great message. For what it's worth, my favorite line in the film is "fauxtanical hydro-jargon" - so clever. So, what was your inspiration for this video?

Don't think less of me if I tell you I was actually watching an informercial for some beauty product. I know, I know, but it was late at night and I was trying to fall back asleep so I picked the most boring thing I could find. The informercial showed a bunch of before and after photos of people that used the product. To me, the "after" photos looked exactly like the "before", but with generous amounts of Photoshop applied. That made me laugh. That's when this idea was born - in the middle of the night.

Jesse Rosten, Redding filmmaker

Q: When did the film become public, and as of Monday night, how many people have seen it?

I put the video online last Tuesday afternoon. As of tonight it has about 4 million views on YouTube and Vimeo combined.

Q: Oh my gosh! That's crazy amazing! Other than the fact that millions of people have watched the film in less than one week, what kinds of other feedback are you receiving?

I'm getting lots of feedback and it's been overwhelmingly positive. Some people love the humor, some people love the social commentary, one person was confused and wanted information on where to buy the product.

Q: Satire can be protected free speech, but even so, have you heard from Photoshop, perchance?

I did a fair bit of research on this before hand. Parody is protected, satire less-so. This project walks the line between both, so I was a little nervous about the possibility that Adobe or one of the magazines might see it.

I haven't heard directly from Adobe (makers of Photoshop) but a reporter in San Francisco was able to track down this official statement from Adobe: "Beauty standards are an issue for society as a whole and not something a software company can dictate. Adobe has always advocated responsible use of products like Photoshop, that fundamentally impact our visual culture. That said, we think filmmaker Jesse Rosten has done a very clever job of bringing this issue to the fore."

I also heard that the beauty editor for Vogue tweeted a link to the video. It's nice to see these big companies have a sense of humor.

Q: Well, not just that, but that you've gotten their attention. That's pretty impressive. Back to the video. What happens to it now?

Nothing really happens with the vid. It will just live online. It was a personal project, something I wanted to make just to see if I could pull it off (by the way, my number one goal was to make people laugh).

Because of its viral nature, the video has already driven a lot of new traffic to my website. Hopefully, I'll make some new connections that way.

I've also donated the video to different schools to use in media/culture classes and to various self-esteem programs. Feels great to feel like one is contributing to the betterment of society

Q: I'll say you have. You made this video about beauty, do you have other pet peeves that you'd like to depict via video?

Haha! I love it. I'm now the "pet peeve" director! Umm, nothing on the horizon. Though maybe I can use this opportunity to present my platform against guys wearing skinny jeans.

Q: Although most locals know you for your award-winning film about the shopping cart, what else are you up to these days? No time for modesty, feel free to brag.

I've been working a lot with bigger agencies out of the area. Lots of work thru LA, Portland and a little in NY. Most of my paying gigs come from commercial directing. Excited to work on more narrative and short film projects this year though.

Q: Any other cool projects you can share with us today?

This is one of my favorites:

Growing is Forever from Jesse Rosten on Vimeo.

And here's a spot that showcases some great Northern California locations:

Stella's Shasta Adventure from Jesse Rosten on Vimeo.

Jesse, humor me. I have to share the The Cart:

Cart - The Film from Jesse Rosten on Vimeo.

Q: Anything else you want to share?

Keep on rocking, Redding.

You, too. Jesse. Thank you for talking with us. And by the way, I have this photo of me that makes me look fat. Do you think you could ....
