The Arbour Lodge DOES have beginning Bridge each Thursday at 10:00AM.

Bridge is also on the Glenbrooke Calendar Tuesdays at 1:00PM and Wednesdays at 10:00.

Good Luck!

If you would like to learn the game, or just see what all the buzz is about, come to the Arbour Lodge activities room on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at 2:00PM. Note: There will be a break at 3:00PM so those that want to sign up for Theater Go’ers plays may do so.

Mah Jongg is played at Arbour Lodge every Monday at 10:00AM. For many players, one day a week is not enough play time and you may find a group meeting in homes, or the clubhouse at other times. The Lodge does have two Mah Jongg sets but residents also bring their own sets if they have them.

You may want to bring a beverage. There is no charge.

It is a great way to meet neighbors and catch up. Remember, people who engage in social activities are not only happier, they live longer!

The group struggled for quite a while without a leader before Ethel Leone stepped up to the plate. Ethel is a perfect fit as she is warm and welcoming while giving the group freedom to talk about what is on their mind. Topics are always varied and interesting.

If you have not popped into the lodge on a Friday morning, you are missing out on coffee (or tea), laughter and friendships. All Glenbrooke residents are encouraged to stop by for the fun hour. The is no charge.

Even if you don’t play Pickleball – or any spots for that matter – the Pickleball Tournament between Del Webb Glenbrooke and Del Webb Woodbridge was a lot of fun! The teams were all having a good time and some of the men’s teams excelled at comical banter as you can see on the video clip below.

I asked around about the scores (even right after the games) and no one seems to know or care that much. One person told me the score, but then added, “ all scores are approximate” – scores were clearly not the emphasis of the game. The idea was to get out and have fun and meet new friends.

The tournament was a success on all fronts. Some players were seen exchanging phone numbers with players from the other community and the rumor is Glenbrooke will be heading to Woodbridge for another get together in November.

We have many new neighbors who may be wondering, "What the heck is this 'Hand and Foot' on the calendar?" It is a card game; scheduled every Monday afternoon at 1:00PM and every Thursday evening at 6:00PM in the Arbour Lodge. It also seems to be the game of choice Saturday at 6:00PM for MINGLES game night.

So, I decided to rerun a piece originally posted after our first exposure to the game. One bit of advice, arrive at least fifteen minutes before the start times as tables fill quickly.

Hand and Foot was easy game to pick up – maybe easier for me as I had played Canasta before. Hand and Foot is related to Canasta in that the object is to make “books” of red (natural) and black (ones with wild cards included) of seven of the same number. There are a few differences in that each player is dealt two sets of cards - the hand, which is played first, and the foot, which is played when the hand has been used up. The scoring has a couple of twists with books of red 7’s and red aces being worth more points than other red books. The game is played with five decks of cards. There are many variations of this game but Ulla Iavello has typed up a sheet of the rules used at Glenbrooke.

Although Hand and Foot can be played by four people in partnerships, it can also be played by six in two teams of three, or by any number of people playing as individuals.

So if you like Canasta, or would enjoy learning a new card game, come to the lodge and find out why so many people enjoy playing this game.
