A group of citizens headed by resident Lynn Wheat have announced the formation of a grassroots citizen’s group aimed at uniting Elk Grove residents to oppose the city’s pending application before the Sacramento Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCo) to ultimately expand the city boundaries by 8,000+/- acres.

Under the banner of “GRASP—A better Elk Grove is within our Grasp - by uniting neighborhoods together.” The group notes that the City’s history of rezones, unrestrained urban sprawl and record breaking residential foreclosures shows the lack of commitment to the approved General Plan.

Elk Grove GRASP is currently undertaking a petition drive to present to LAFCo showing that local residents are deeply concerned about: their continuing decline in home property values; lack of infill development; updated market data suggesting less demand for future growth; and the future costs to existing residents to provide water, sewer, fire, police, and other services to the new area. GRASP is opposed to the unnecessary city expansion to specifically accommodate more of the same type of development which has dominated the city during the past ten years—more rooftops and strip mall centers.

Elk Grove GRASP welcomes interested residents to view their web site, Facebook page, or e-mail them for further information on how they can participate in becoming more involved in planning the future of Elk Grove.

Web site: http://elkgrovegrasp.org/ email: EG.grasp@gmail.com

(We all most likely have different opinions regarding this and I fully understand and welcome that.)

COFFEE FILTERS

Who knew! And you can buy 1,000 at the Dollar Tree for .00, even the large ones.

1. Cover bowls or dishes when cooking in the microwave. Coffee filters make excellent covers.

2. Clean windows, mirrors, and chrome... Coffee filters are lint-free so they'll leave windows sparkling.

3. Protect China by separating your good dishes with a coffee filter between each dish.

4. Filter broken cork from wine. If you break the cork when opening a wine bottle, filter the wine through a coffee filter.

5. Protect a cast-iron skillet. Place a coffee filter in the skillet to absorb moisture and prevent rust.

6. Apply shoe polish. Ball up a lint-free coffee filter.

7. Recycle frying oil. After frying, strain oil through a sieve lined with a coffee filter.

8. Weigh chopped foods. Place chopped ingredients in a coffee filter on a kitchen scale.

9. Hold tacos. Coffee filters make convenient wrappers for messy foods.

10. Stop the soil from leaking out of a plant pot. Line a plant pot with a coffee filter to prevent the soil from going through the drainage holes.

11. Prevent a Popsicle from dripping. Poke one or two holes as needed in a coffee filter.

12. Do you think we used expensive strips to wax eyebrows? Use strips of coffee filters..

13. Put a few in a plate and put your fried bacon, French fries, chicken fingers, etc on them.. It soaks out all the grease.

14. Keep in the bathroom. They make great "razor nick fixers.."

15. As a sewing backing. Use a filter as an easy-to-tear backing for embroidering or appliquéing soft fabrics.

16. Put baking soda into a coffee filter and insert into shoes or a closet to absorb or prevent odors.

17. Use them to strain soup stock and to tie fresh herbs in to put in soups and stews.

18 Use a coffee filter to prevent spilling when you add fluids to your car..

19. Use them as a spoon rest while cooking and clean up small counter spills.

20. Can use to hold dry ingredients when baking or when cutting a piece of fruit or veggies. Saves on having extra bowls to wash.

21. Use them to wrap Christmas ornaments for storage.

22. Use them to remove fingernail polish when out of cotton balls.

23. Use them to sprout seeds. Simply dampen the coffee filter, place seeds inside, fold it and place it into a zip-lock plastic bag until they sprout.

24. Use coffee filters as blotting paper for pressed flowers. Place the flowers between two coffee filters and put the coffee filters in phone book.

25. Use as a disposable "snack bowl" for popcorn, chips, etc.

26. Great in the tool room when separating nails and screws then use in to bottom of containers to remove moisture and prevent rust.

27. The make beautiful paper roses - click HERE for instructions

One of the specific areas we have looked to job growth is in state employment as Elk Grove is home to over 24,000 state employees – most of which must drive to other communities to work. In 2008, as Mayor, I "cold-called" the heads of just about every state agency and pleaded with them to consider moving to Elk Grove. Since then, we have introduced legislation, twice, that would require the state to take into account the location of employees when considering a move. Further, we adopted the State of California’s only economic incentive program for locating state jobs in a community. And, we created a subcommittee of the City Council, Steve Detrick and me, focused purely on attracting state jobs to Elk Grove.Today, our hard work has paid off. I am pleased to announce that Elk Grove has just landed their first major state agency – over 1500 jobs!!! And not just any jobs. These are high wage, high quality jobs. Many of which are physicians and supportive medical positions.

The City of Elk Grove will be the new headquarters for the California Correctional Health Care Services administrative headquarters! More details will be rolled out in the next few days. Needless to say, we are excited about this opportunity to bring so many high quality jobs to Elk Grove!

Sincerely,

Gary Davis
Elk Grove City Council Member

She also feared the electrical storm might harm her child. Full of concern, the mother got into her car and quickly drove along the route to her child's school.

As she did, she saw her little girl walking along.

At each flash of lightning, the child would stop, look up, and smile.

More lighting followed quickly and with each, the little girl would look at the streak of light and smile.

When the mother drew up beside the child, she lowered the window and called, "What are you doing?

The child answered, "I am trying to look pretty because God keeps taking my picture."

Pursuant to Council direction, City of Elk Grove staff is beginning a project to review the amount, location, and character of the industrial areas of the City. The intent of this project is to ensure that the City has the right amount of industrial land and that industrial areas are compatible with surrounding uses.

Additionally, the City will be looking at the types of uses that are appropriate in the existing industrial areas. Industrial properties have historically been reserved for manufacturing, storage, and processing of goods. Some property owners have suggested that other uses, including offices, restaurants, and public assembly, are compatible, too. While allowing these uses within industrial areas would create additional economic opportunities, it may also reduce the City’s inventory of industrial property. These issues will be explored as part of this special project.

Public Outreach

The City is planning several public workshops in June and July to present the project to the public and to solicit input and feedback (please see below). Residents, businesses, development stakeholders, and other interested persons are encouraged to attend the meeting, learn about the project, and share their thoughts.

Join us for the first
community workshop on the project!
Workshop Date: Tuesday, June 21, 2011
Meeting Time: 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Meeting Location: Elk Grove City Hall
Council Chambers
8400 Laguna Palms Way

Seven (7) project sites have been identified.......see map
