Bringing Neighbors Together

Home Burglarized

From Mary Weatherill

I was just notified that a resident on the 9900 block of Sheffield had her home burglarized this afternoon (August 10, 2012).  A lot of things were taken.  Her car was broken into at work and they got her home information and her garage opener.  They can come at any time with this access and information.  Neighbors,  if you see someone moving items from a home and the resident hasn't told you they are moving, call the neighbor's numbers and emergency numbers, maybe challenge whoever is doing the moving and if you are not satisfied--call the police.  I'm sorry to say this is a crime of opportunity.   If the opener is missing, immediately change the opening code.

  1. A few years ago we had a police officer come to work to give a talk about safety and security. One of the things I remember and have been doing ever since is to never have anything with your home address in your car. He said to black out your address on your vehicle registration and insurance card most of us carry in the glove compartment. That way if a thief breaks in to your car, or someone at the car wash, etc makes an imprint of your house key, they won't know where you live.

  2. thanks joan, did not know we could 'do' that!

  3. Original documents should never be tampered with.

Make a copy and on that copy black out your address, then make a copy of that and put it in your car.
Why a copy of the blacked out copy?
Some black out inks can be seen through or even removed to reveal what you thought you covered up.
You have your driver license with you for the Police if you have to produce this information for them.
Never give false information to the Police unless you want to have an additional charge added to whatever they are stopping you for.
Your address blacked out on a copy should be fine--they can put it all together.

All car purchase information or car service tags should not be carried in the car--they all have the same information.
Create a file at home and keep those types of important papers there including the originals of the registration and insurance.

I only leave my car key when my car is serviced--it quickly removes from the rest of my keys.
If you valet park you might also want to give only the car key up.

These are things to think about.
Like always I tell everyone--you get to live your life like you choose.
We all make bad decisions at times.
    Hindsight is wonderful.
    Mary

  4. Don't carry your car registration or insurance information in your glove box--carry it in your wallet. You'll always have your wallet with you when you're driving, so you'll always have the information you need--and that a thief can't get unless he steals your wallet. That's less likely than someone breaking into your car and stealing your registration and insurance information with your name and address on it.
