Flag Day
Flag Day, like the Fourth of July, is a truly American holiday. The inspiration for Flag Day goes back to June 14, 1777 when the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution adopting our flag.
At that time the flag would carry 13 stripes and 13 stars. The Colors would be red (representing valor) white (purity) and blue (perseverance and justice).
It was not until 1885 when a schoolteacher in Wisconsin arranged for June 14th to be a “ flag birthday “. Numerous communities and states began to celebrate Flag Day before President Wilson established Flag Day in 1916. But it was not until 1949 that President Truman signed an act of Congress that National Flag Day be observed every June 14th.
For you history buffs that flag had only 48 stars as it was not until 1959 that Alaska and Hawaii obtained statehood.
So lets all raise our flags on June 14th as Glenbrooke salutes National Flag Day.
