Bringing Neighbors Together

ANOTHER COMMUNITY JEWEL

by George Beitzel

Elk Grove has a highly developed and maintained neighborhood park system that we can all be proud of and enjoy. It also has a another excellent public resource. The Elk Grove-Cosumnes Cemetery District .

This district is one of

thousands of special districts organized in California to do specific tasks for its users. The District was organized in 1951.It’s Board members are appointed by the County Board of Supervisors. The Cemetery District is funded through property tax levies and sales of cemetery related services. It owns, operates and maintains 6 cemeteries in our area. Prior to the Districts organization several of the cemeteries had been left uncared for and were in unsightly condition.

The Cemeteries include Elk Grove *, Elder Creek, Franklin*, Hilltop *, Pleasant Grove * and San Joaquin Cemeteries.  The  4 marked with an * have burial plots available to purchase for around $ 600 for a single plot.  Most of the cemeteries date back into the late 1800’s. The two most famous residents of our cemeteries are Elitha Donner Wilder of the ill fated Donner party in Elk Grove and explorer Alexander Hamilton Willard in Franklin. There are several other local cemeteries in the area, most notably the Historic Cosumnes and Slough House Pioneer Cemetery and Union School Cemetery which are privately held and not open to the public

The Districts office is located at 8540 Elk Grove Blvd. adjacent to the Elk Grove Cemetery at Hwy. 99 and Elk Grove Blvd. Their office hours are 10 a.m- 2p.m. M.-F. The office / voice mail may also be contacted at 916 686 5170.
