Radar in 2004
Our Police Department's service canine, Radar, will retire this month. Radar was born in Costa Rica and started her service with the Elk Grove Police Department in 2004.

Dog Recovers Drug Money, Weapons and Narcotics during
First Two Weeks on the Job
ELK GROVE, CA –The Elk Grove Police Department's
new Narcotics Detector Dog, a female yellow Labrador
named 'Radar,' has helped recover nearly $40,000 in
drug money, an illegal weapon and several pounds of
narcotics since she joined the squad.
"With Radar's help, we were able to make a crucial
bust and take dangerous threats off the streets," said
Elk Grove Police Chief Robert Simmons. "With her
confiscating guns and drugs, we are continuing our
pledge to keep Elk Grove residents safe."
Born in Costa Rica, Radar was purchased through a private donation given to the Elk Grove
Police Department. Radar will demonstrate her sniffing skills during the January 5, 2005
council meeting.
Detective Kyle Hoertsch, Radar's handler, is also offering Radar's skill sets to help local
businesses. Merchants can request that their business be routinely "sniffed" if they suspect
narcotics activity is taking place. In order for businesses to participate they must attend a
one-hour class and at the conclusion, will receive a certificate and a sticker with Radar's
picture reading "These premises are routinely sniffed by a Narcotics Detector Dog."
Interested local businesses canweeks of narcotics training in Modesto, CA. Radar isand has been certified to detect marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, andopium. Over the last seven years Radar has been responsible for the seizure of approx10 Lbs of cocaine, 15 Lbs of methamphetamine, various amount of heroin, hundredsof pounds of marijuana, as well as several hundred marijuana plants. Radar is alsoresponsible for the successful seizure of over $150,000 in US currency. Radar will beretiring and staying with her handler of six years, Ryan Elmore.
