The Whitelock Central Channel Update
by George BeitzelThe drainage ditch on the south side of Glenbrooke bordered by Whitelock
Parkway is an important part of our community. Its official title is " The Whitelock
Central Channel ".
Not only do 30 homes border the ditch but many residents
walk along it for human and canine exercise. It is also home to a variety of local
animals. The ditch was built to provide drainage for the community during the
rainy season and does the job well. Will it flood and overflow into our homes ?
No. Unless we have rains of biblical proportions.
If we think of the ditch as a big U, The bottom 80 % is maintained by the City
of Elk Grove and the top 20 % and sides ( the areas covered with bark as well
as shrubs and trees ) are maintained by the Cosumnes Community Services
District. They coordinate their actions in a professional manner. Both employ
contractors to do most of the work. The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector
Control District provides our mosquito control.
I recently contacted both ditch oversight entities to discus the issues of water
management , dead and dying trees / shrubs and removal of dead brush and
trees from the ditch. You may have noticed that the dead material has been
removed which really provides a well groomed view. Not so evident is that a new
improved longer watering schedule has been put in place and repair of a handful
of defective irrigation heads has been completed.
Bark refreshment and tree/shrub replacement require budgetary consideration
and are not in the current budget. A tip of the hat to John Connolly and Brian
Morphis ( Cosumnes CSD ) for their excellent work on rehabbing our ditch.
Thank you gentlemen.

Thank You George for keeping an eye out for the Whitelock Central Canal and it's maintance.
And yes, CSD--John Connolly -- Brian Morphis and their contracted crews do do a great job.
That's a lot of vegetation to keep watered, pruned, and just plain looking good.
The City has a scheduled time of the year that they mow the grass/weeds that maked up the bottom of the Canal. You can imagine how much mowing had to be done all over Elk Grove because of the long rain season we had this year.
The weeds are mowed the landscape has been beautified.
I hope everyone here in Glenbrooke appreciates the effort.
We do have a wonderful area to walk around.

George's overview of our channel (ditch) was insightful and illuminating. I knew some of the facts but not all.
George has filled in the blanks. Thanks so much, George!
