ELK GROVE CIVIL WAR ROUNDTABLE
Editor''s Note: Our own George Beitzel is the President of this group and shares his love of history with us and this organization.
Civil War Roundtables are non profit educational associations. Their purpose is to promote and further stimulate interest in all aspects of the Civil War period and to further discussion and study of the Civil War. There are about 300 Roundtables in the United States and a few in other countries, primarily Australia and the United Kingdom.
The Elk Grove Civil War Roundtable was founded in 1993. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month ( except December) in the Denny’s Restaurant meeting room at 8707 Elk Grove Blvd. Elk Grove. No host dinner is at 6 p.m. The meeting runs from 7-8:30 p. m. Dress is casual and is free to the public. Normally about 25 members attend. We also have a monthly newsletter, “ The Haversack “. Public service events include our Memorial Day program at the Old Sacramento City Cemetery and providing docents for Civil War education activities at Gibson Park.
We have a presenter each month that covers a specific topic and then questions and answers. We sometimes have show and tell of civil war objects a member has acquired.
To give an idea of the range of topics, this years included : Col. Grant & Mark Twain, The Irish Immigration, The Great Vermont Bank Robbery, United States Colored Troops, S.S. Sultana and Sacramento remembers the Civil War. Our August topic is Civil War Naval Activities, September is Angel Island in 1860, October is General William Hardee and November is Cartoons of the Civil War Era.
