Neighbor President of Elk Grove Historical Society
by George Beitzel
We have a hidden jewel in Elk Grove and it is only a couple of miles from Glenbrooke. That is the Old Elk Grove Hotel located at 9941 East Stockton Boulevard in the Elk Grove Regional Park. The Elk Grove Historical Society maintains the Hotel, now a Museum, as well as the nearby Rhoads School.
Our neighbor, Jim Entrican, is president of the all volunteer Historical Society. The museum is open on the first saturday of the month from noon to 4 pm. and for a variety of other special occasions. Such as the annual yard sale, victorian tea, historical home tour and our favorite, the Hotel Christmas fundraiser. Then the hotel is decorated in a Victorian Christmas theme with each room showcasing a different scene from the past.
The museum has revolving exhibits of different themes from Elk Grove’s past donated to the museum by local families and friends of the museum. An unusual building on the museum grounds is the original Elk Grove justice court / jail. There is also an exhibit about the areas original inhabitants, the Miwok Indian tribe.
The Rhoads school dates to 1890’s and was moved to the park for educational purposes. Schoolmarm docents reenact what school was like in the 1800’s for visiting local students.
Plan a visit to the old Hotel some time in the future. Further details can be found on their web site eghs@elkgrovehistoricalsociety.com
