Bringing Neighbors Together

Elk Grove Library needs more Glenbrooke Volunteers

by George Beitzel

The original Elk Grove library opened in 1908 as the first free county library in California.  Today it is one of 30 branches in the Sacramento Library system. It is also one of the most modern. The building at 8900 Elk Grove-Florin Road in Elk Grove  houses some 60,000 volumes with over a million more available through internet ordering. There are over 30 computers for public access as well as many activities.

How can you join in to help this much needed  community resource ? I visited with Margie Veach who coordinates volunteer activities at the branch and was surprised at the variety of volunteer positions needed. They include book shelver, tagging books with  Radio Frequency I.D. tags, assist with children and teen library programs, become a library docent, sort donated materials, help with the automated material handling machine, become a Friend of the Library and help with the book sales which support youth library programs or help teach reading to adults and children.

You can chose your hours to fit your schedule. If you have an interest you can talk with Margie at the branch or email her at      mveach@saclibrary.org.  Your neighbors George Beitzel and Linda O’Hara are library volunteers and can also answer some questions here in Glenbrooke.

  1. Thanks for your efforts to help make the library so well run. I have to say, I've never experienced a library with better customer service anywhere. The automated processes run smoothly, and the staff has always been extremely helpful.
