Our Memorial Day Pot Luck was an enjoyable event.....however - Attending this function you would never know what we were celebrating. I don't expect Glenbrooke to have an Honor Guard or long speeches about those who served our country. But could they not have at least asked for those who have served our country to stand and be recognized and thanked for their service? Apart for a few pictures posted on the wall, it was just another "Fun" night for Glenbrooke. Though I find Glenbrooke residents quite young - I think there are many who have served our country in its various wars. I was glad to see a picture of "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" as my husband was amongst the first group that landed on Iwo Jima. Yes, he was wounded and sent to a hospital on Guam and then on to Hilo, Hawaii (really a blessing, because had he stayed he probably would have been killed in the terrible battles that continued on that island.) Like most survivors of wars, he never talked much about what went on. It was only after he was gone that I found papers and information about the terrible conditions our servicemen endured so that we would have the freedom to have "fun" on Memorial Day!! Next year, Lets recognize those who gave us this freedom we all enjoy.
Very moving comment Kay. Did not attend the Memorial Day Potluck, but I totally understand what you're saying. Traditional observance has dimished over the years, many have forgotten the meaning and traditions. I believe there are several in this community who served in the military and some who have children and grandchildren now serving and it would have been fitting for them to have been honored at this celebration. I remember when I was a small child the wearing of the red poppies on Memorial Day in honor of those who died serving the nation during war. Believe they were sold by the VFW's. Maybe what is needed is for a return to the traditional day of observance, May 30th.
