Bringing Neighbors Together

Senior Nights at Cassidy’s

The Senior Citizens of Elk Grove (SCEG) has started a "Senior Night at Cassidy's Family Restaurant" and will have the first gathering on Tuesday, February 16th.

The idea is to provide a dinner and social program every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening.      SCEG provides volunteers to welcome participants and introduce them to others.   Cassidy's  is a local, family-owned restaurant located at  8511 Elk Grove Blvd in Elk Grove.   Dinner  specials are only $ 5.99 plus tax and include dessert and coffee.  Reservations are not necessary.

  1. OK, that's a good idea, but......JMO: why can't we have our own "Night Out"? Why do we have to join another group when there's more than enough here to fill a retaurant. How about a Yogelato or Starbuck's night? Of course, there's getting it organized. I just went over the first week of February on the calendar and there are twelve (12) times listed for card games. Am I the only one just not that interested in that, I doubt it. Other than excercise classes that's just about it. When there's an evening event such as the one Fri. PM, there's not enough room for everyone, Bus Trip, can't accomodate everyone, etc. What about speakers re: entertaining at home...art...books...makeup...there's a zillion things and many can be arranged for free. Can't leave the men out....ideas? Times are lean for local businesses and word-of-mouth means a lot to them.

Feed back anyone???? No? OK, I'll just go away and go cruise by myself. :-)

  2. OK...just did a 30 min. search for SOME things that might be of interest:

Travel Agent - Travel during what is called "shoulder season".
    Haitian jewelry showing-sales
Bowling night - beginners + experts
Soccer World - start up maybe end of Feb. or lst of March/watch the young ones play-FREE
Tour of OLD EG - can maybe be arranged by one of our CC
Author, Abraham Verghese, graduate of Stanford, Medical professor & author of "Cutting for Stone"...this one might be a reach! $$$
Many more when I get my thinking cap on....are the Lodge employees from EG or ???? Regina, I know about!!!

And then we get to that "old" problem again of "communication" with the residents. Still waiting for that survey!

  3. Norma, I think you hit the nail on the head when you said it takes someone to organize it. It has taken a long time to get the word out about Saturday night social at the clubhouse (Every Saturday night there is not an event at the Lodge at 6:00PM) it is not listed on the association calendar.

There are games and cards but wine and conversation around the fireplace is needed too. We will work on that. Plus, as the weather improves, it is nice to enjoy the outdoor fireplaces.

Maybe Cassidy's will be a startof a dinner group, a few people get together and go there. Then they invite someone else or they decide to try somewhere else.

We need activities that include the entire community!

  4. You're right about that! Do having those formal "Groups" eliminate some from attending? I sure don't know the answer and am starting to care even less. Have you ever noticed how few even post on this web site...have no idea how many in Glenbrooke view it and it's such a great addition and one that we needed. But you've gotta feed it or it will just dry up and go away. Darcie has more patience I guess than I do. Think that's her middle name, while mine is "impatient"! "S--- or get off the pot". (Now Darcie's going to delete me) :-) Oh well, been there...done that!

  5. Norma no one would ever delete you. We agree it would be nice for other's to comment but there are alot of people who read it and feel uncomfortable writing a response or maybe worry about what someone else would say or think f they were to speak up. Seems there are folks who are quiet (you won't believe Glen use to be that way) and those who speak up but we love them all just the same and welcome them to Saturday social.

  6. Glen quiet? Hard to picture that!

We're some of those newcomers to the community of EG from So. CA and I would love for some to post some tips...anything, so we can get to know people better and places to go that they enjoyed. Everywhere we go, even in EG sometimes, we have to map it out and do an online search to get there. Drs., DDS, banks, insurance, post office, restaurants, theatre....most everything. We never think about the miles...just do we have time to get there and back today. We've been to the theatre a couple of times, going again in wk or so, wasn't a member of the Theatre Group, so assumed I couldn't join them. That's why I mentioned the "Group" thing, maybe confusing for some. I know, I know, you can't guide everyone around by the hand.
It seems that most of our activities are outside of Glenbrooke, don't know exactly how that happened. For instance, yesterday's Super Bowl, nothing at the Lodge which was unbelievable to me so off I go to another party... out of Glenbrooke.

As for Cassidy's...not my favorite, but I'll make do if that's everyone's choice. Wanta eat sitting on the curb , haven't done that yet, so why not? Need to try everything once in our lifetime!

  7. Norma, you have some great ideas - keep sharing them. We CAN do something here easily.

Tonight, Vickie came up with a great idea for the Saturday night social. On February 20th, we are going host a potato bar.
I will do a story on it later but for those that read the forums here is your reward (early scoop)

Saturday Social and BAKE POTATO BAR Saturday, February 20th – 6:00 pm

Come enjoy m eeting your neighbors, fixing you own baked potato creation. Then stay and visit by the fireplace, enjoy desserts and/or play billards, or games in the card room.

Vickie and Darcie will host a Baked Potato Bar for the Saturday Night Social on February 20th.
We will be furnishing the bake potatoes, cheese, sour cream, butter and broccoli. Bring a dessert to share and your favorite beverage.

  8. PS
Vickie is right, there are a lot of people that read Glenbrookenews.com. Here is a snapshot of our statistics so far today.

  9. A lot of views I must say.

Baked potatoes...can't beat that. I'll bring the paper plates, forks & napkins...OK? I always end up eating when I get home, if at all. Not being a big drinker, even though I joke about it with AJ, that glass of wine on the empty stomach doesn't always work. Makes me feel tired! Need to stick with the iced tea I guess. Think about something else you need, call. I'm open for anything. Requires too much cooking....have to call sallycali to help me out.

  10. Yes we are pleased with the numbers but remember those are PAGE views not 'unique" visitors.

Thanks Norma for volunteering to bring the paper goods!

  11. First, I would like to thank all who organized and furnished all the food for the Baked Potato Saturday Night.
It was very nice of you to foot the expense. I would have contributed if you'd had a "tip jar" to help offset expenses.
    It was a huge success.
Now the MINGLE Group can get going again under new leadership.
Many moons ago we did put together a group and went to a Wine Bar on the night they served food, that also was very successful and well attended.
Unfortunately, Jennings Wine Bar has since closed, but you could do something like that again, and yes it does take a great deal of time and effort.

Darcie, please send me your private email address and I will forward the old spreadsheet of email address and phone numbers of the orginal group.

    Again, thanks for your efforts
